Statement from SBTi Board of Trustees: Carbon Offsets Permitted for Abatement of Scope 3 Emissions

April 9, 2024

📢 Hot off the Press! SBTi to allow carbon credits and other environmental attribute certificates for abatement of Scope 3 GHG emissions 📢

After conducting extensive consultations over the past six months and reviewing survey results, SBTi recognizes the potential of environmental attribute certificates as a tool to tackle climate change when supported by scientific evidence and robust policies.

As a result, SBTi has decided to extend the use of these certificates for abatement of Scope 3 emissions beyond current limits. This extension will involve defining specific guardrails, thresholds, and rules to ensure the validity of certificates, in line with the principles of mitigation hierarchy.

Stay tuned for updates as the SBTi works towards issuing a first draft of their revised guidance by July of 2024! For more information, click here!🚀🌱 #ClimateAction #SBTi #NetZero #Scope3 #Decarbonization
