Zombie Fires Still Smoldering in Western Canada

February 21, 2024

The persistent threat of “zombie fires” looms over Western Canada, where over 100 wildfires, including 92 in British Columbia and 54 in Alberta, continue to smoulder from last year’s season. Sonja Leverkus, a veteran wildland firefighter, expresses concern as these fires simmer beneath the surface, ready to reignite with warmer weather. Zombie fires are expected to continue and become more common in the future, as the climate warms and the exceptionally hot and dry conditions of the summer contribute to longer-lasting wildfires. Provinces are bracing for an early and potentially intense wildfire season, prompting increased monitoring and preparation efforts. Leverkus and her colleagues gear up for what may be an earlier-than-usual battle against the flames, while communities remain on edge, grappling with the persistent threat of smoke and evacuation fears.
