Verra Consolidates Sustainable Grassland Methodologies

May 23, 2024

Verra is streamlining its sustainable grassland methodologies within the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program. This consolidation will standardize requirements and procedures for increasing soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks in native grassland systems, facilitating the generation of high-quality carbon credits and the expansion of impactful restoration activities.

Key Updates:

Methodology Inactivation: VM0026 Methodology for Sustainable Grassland Management, v1.1, will be inactivated as of May 30, 2024.

Methodology Revision: VM0032 Methodology for the Adoption of Sustainable Grasslands through Adjustment of Fire and Grazing, v1.0, will be updated to provide more comprehensive guidance on calibrating and validating biogeochemical models.

Dynamic Baseline Approach: The revision of VM0032, proposed by Soils for the Future, will include a dynamic baseline approach and expanded guidance for SOC stock quantification.

Public Consultation: Verra will conduct a public consultation on the planned updates to VM0032, ensuring the robustness of the biogeochemical modeling guidance with input from independent experts.

Grace Periods for VM0026:

New projects must be listed as “under development” or “under validation” by August 31, 2024, and complete validation by May 31, 2025.
Validated projects can continue using VM0026 until the next baseline reassessment or crediting period renewal.

These updates will also be considered in the major revision of VM0042, ensuring clear and non-duplicative methodologies.
