Conservation International announced on January 15th a debt-for-nature swap between the US and Indonesia.
A debt-for-nature swap is essentially a financial agreement where a portion of a developing country’s debt is forgiven or restructured in exchange for that country undertaking environmental conservation measures. In this case, over the next nine years and in place of existing debt commitments, Indonesia will redirect $35M USD to establish a conservation fund that will support projects designed to restore and maintain the country’s coral reefs.
