U of A research looks at how solar energy in agricultural areas increases production for both

Farmers in Arizona’s intense heat face challenges in protecting their crops, but the University of Arizona is pioneering a solution through an innovative practice called agrivoltaics. Led by Professor Greg Barron-Gafford, this initiative explores how solar panels can be used to shade crops, allowing for simultaneous food and renewable energy production.

The research shows that solar panels benefit from the cooling effect of plants, increasing their efficiency by up to 18 degrees Fahrenheit. In return, the shaded plants grow larger and healthier than those in direct sunlight. This method, already in use in countries like Israel and Kenya, holds promise for more sustainable farming practices. Barron-Gafford is optimistic about its potential, stating, “We know this works. We know the potential is here.”
