The updated SBTi guidance has sparked quite a debate

Although SBTi staff and several NGOs have expressed concern and fear that this will enable companies to use offsets for greenwashing, avoiding making the necessary cuts in GHG emissions, there are others who see this – executed correctly – as a positive step forward and a welcome change.

Indigo Agriculture reminds us to consider the bigger picture: This new guidance proposes greater flexibility for companies to meet their Scope 3 targets, and we should not jump to conclusions that allowing limited flexibility for companies’ value chain emissions would let companies off the hook for their own internal decarbonization.

In early summer, SBTi intends to release more information about safeguards and other precautionary measures to ensure the transaction of only high-quality and high-integrity carbon credits. Stay tuned!
