Ontario Proposes Repeal of Endangered Species Act: Public Feedback Open Until May 17

May 8, 2025

Ontario has announced plans to repeal the Endangered Species Act, 2007 and replace it with the Species Conservation Act, 2025 – a move aimed at streamlining project approvals, but one that could significantly weaken protections for at-risk wildlife.

Conservation groups, including Birds Canada, are raising serious concerns that this could undermine decades of habitat and species protection work across the province.

The public comment period is open until May 17, 2025, at 11:59 p.m.. Environmental professionals, ecologists, planners, and policy advocates are encouraged to review the proposal and provide feedback!
