As companies let their SBTi net-zero commitments lapse, some are opting for alternative climate frameworks, while others remain in a holding pattern, waiting for clearer, unified guidance. 🌱

The upcoming Corporate Net-Zero Standard (CNZS) aims to address existing gaps, but its draft still lacks critical detail. Globally, frameworks like ISO Net Zero and the UN HLEG recommendations offer broad principles but no binding thresholds or timelines, making it difficult to compare efforts or ensure measurable progress.

This growing fragmentation is a red flag. Moving away from target-setting bodies like SBTi could further splinter the landscape, just when we need standardization the most. Many of these emerging frameworks build upon the foundational work of SBTi, and most are designed to complement one another – not replace them.

A harmonized approach to climate action is essential. We need interconnected systems that reinforce each other – combining accounting (e.g., GHG Protocol, ISO 14064), target-setting (e.g., SBTi), and disclosure (e.g., CSRD, California climate laws) – to build real accountability!🌍
