Global plastics treaty close in Ottawa

April 29, 2024

Latest UN plastic treaty negotiations (INC-4) wrapped up today with some progress on the draft text, but concerns linger over production cuts and funding. Environmental groups criticize the lack of ambition and influence of fossil fuel lobbyists.

INC-4 in Ottawa saw proposals for a 40% reduction in plastic production by 2040, yet a final agreement wasn’t reached. Countries agreed on expert meetings leading up to INC-5 in Busan, South Korea.

The treaty’s implications on plastic pollution and the plastic credit market are significant. Major players like Verra advocate for plastic credits as financing to combat pollution. Plastic Credit Exchange also highlights plastic credits’ importance in financing solutions. Prevent Waste Alliance publishes guidelines to harmonize plastic credit landscape. However, some reject plastic credits as false solutions, favoring other approaches.
