Deforestation in Colombia surged by 35% in 2024, rebounding from a 23-year low the previous year, largely driven by increased activity in the Amazon region, Environment Minister Susana Muhamad announced on Thursday.
The deforested area expanded to 1,070 square kilometers (413 square miles) in 2024, up from just over 792 square kilometers in 2023, following a reduction from approximately 1,235 square kilometers in 2022.
“We’ve observed a rise in 2024 in medium-sized deforestation patches, funded by large capital operations,” Muhamad said in Bogota, emphasizing that organized crime, rather than rural communities, was primarily responsible.
