Working with Alberta Innovates and Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation, Viresco conducted an extensive techno-economic analysis on six bioplastic production pathways, focusing on Alberta’s potential as a hub for production. Our team assessed technology readiness, end-market opportunities, feedstock availability and cost, and commercialization challenges. This initiative was launched in response to Canada’s goal of achieving zero plastic waste by 2030. By leveraging different locally-available feedstocks and existing infrastructure and expertise from the oil and gas industry, this project aims to contribute to our understanding of what would be needed to create a more circular materials economy and environmentally friendly future for plastic products.
