Alberta’s Electricity Grid to Fully Wean Off Coal This Summer ๐ŸŒŸ

In a remarkable shift, Alberta is set to achieve a coal-free electricity grid this summer, six years ahead of schedule! Just a decade ago, coal accounted for over half of Alberta’s electricity, but recent milestones show a rapid transformation.

According to the latest data, the province has experienced several hours with zero coal in its energy mix. This achievement has even surprised economists who were instrumental in designing Alberta’s coal phaseout plan less than a decade ago.

The final step in this transition will be the completion of Capital Power’s Genesee 1 and 2 plants’ transition to natural gas, scheduled for this summer. This move will mark a significant reduction in coal’s capacity, from over 5,500 MW a decade ago to just 820 MW today.

“I think it’s arguably the largest emissions-reduction policy in Canadian history,” says Andrew Leach, economist at the University of Alberta, highlighting the impact of Alberta’s industrial carbon pricing framework.

This phaseout not only signifies a major environmental win but also showcases effective policy design and industry collaboration. The reduction in emissions is substantial, with Alberta’s electricity emissions projected to drop from 50 megatonnes in 2005 to 16.5 MT this year.
