Alberta’s Electricity Grid Goes Coal-Free!

July 8, 2024

Some positive news to start your week off right: Alberta is now running a coal-free electricity grid with no coal anticipated in future forecasts, decades ahead of schedule!

📣 Statement from Scott MacDougall, Pembina Institute: “Alberta’s grid operating coal-free is a monumental achievement, offering cleaner air and cost-savings for Albertans. With coal previously making up 80% of electricity in the early 2000s, this rapid transition showcases the power of good policy design and investment.”

💡 Key Highlights:

Peak Coal Usage: 80% in March 2001.
Early Target: Original full coal phase-out was set for 2061, now achieved by 2024!
Future Grid: Aiming for a net-zero grid with more wind, solar, and battery storage.
