At the 76th International Astronautical Congress, CSA President Lisa Campbell announced a $5 million investment in satellite-powered projects aimed at tackling biodiversity loss across Canada🌿
Under the smartEarth initiative, 20 Canadian companies – 8 of them partnering with Indigenous organizations – will develop cutting-edge solutions using satellite data and AI to monitor ecosystems, detect invasive species, track migratory birds, and assess habitat health. These tools will generate actionable insights to protect nature, support local communities, and strengthen Canada’s green economy.
This investment supports Canada’s 2030 Nature Strategy and builds critical expertise in biodiversity monitoring, conservation, and climate resilience. It’s also helping to grow the country’s innovative space sector while creating high-quality jobs.
