Reflecting on the Integrating Carbon and Biodiversity Indicators Workshop

December 20, 2024

On December 3rd, Nicola Shaw and Trevor Paul had the privilege of attending the Integrating Carbon and Biodiversity Indicators Workshop, hosted by the Canadian Forage & Grassland Association in partnership with Nature United. This engaging hybrid event in Guelph, Ontario, was part of the Tomorrow’s Prairies project and focused on advancing tools and frameworks to harmonize carbon and biodiversity indicators for grassland management.

The workshop brought together stakeholders across conservation, agriculture, and industry to explore critical themes, including:

Integration of the Habitat & Biodiversity Assessment Tool (HBAT) with national inventories like the National Grassland Inventory (NGI).
Quantification and prediction modeling for biodiversity outcomes tied to best management practices. Identifying gaps, challenges, and opportunities for a unified vision in grassland biodiversity monitoring.

A big thank you to Ronnie Drever with Nature United and Cedric MacLeod with the Canadian Forage & Grassland Association for all your work on this project. Another big thank you to John K Pattison-Williams for being such an excellent host and facilitator, and to all the participants for an impactful day of learning and collaboration!

🌍 Together, we’re shaping a more sustainable future. 🌍
