The Wildlife Trusts are leading efforts to restore 60,000 hectares of UK peatlands, crucial for capturing carbon and supporting biodiversity.
However, much of this work is missing from the UK Government’s Net Zero strategy, which underestimates the scale of restoration efforts. Healthy peatlands act as carbon sinks, but 80% are degraded, releasing emissions.
Accurate reporting and increased transparency are needed to better account for this vital work. Peatland restoration is key to meeting climate goals!
